Bruce Bairnsfather began sketching in the trenches. By 1915 his cartoons about army life featured in The Bystander. Wounded in action, he continued to sketch during his recovery. His drawings were widely popular. With his most famous character being Old Bill, a middle-aged soldier with a walrus moustache.
